Will a JK Wrangler PCM Work in a JL?

A Jeep Wrangler PCM from a JK will not run a JL, and a 3.8 JK module will not run a 3.6 JK. The body style stayed a Wrangler. The computer did not stay the same.

People order "a Wrangler PCM" from the year they remember, then find a crank-no-start and a security light. The module family, the engine, and the immobilizer all have to match the Jeep in the driveway.

Here is the split between TJ, JK, and JL, and what programming still has to happen after the right hardware is in hand.

Wrangler PCM Families

Generation Engines you will actually see What the replacement has to match
TJ, 1997-2006 4.0, and the 2.5 on earlier trucks That generation's module and calibration. Not a JK part.
JK, 2007-2011 3.8 3.8 file, manual or automatic
JK, 2012-2018 3.6 Pentastar 3.6 file. A 3.8 calibration will not run it.
JL, 2018-up 3.6, 2.0 turbo, 392, 4xe The engine that was built into that VIN, including hybrid content on a 4xe

Start from the Wrangler PCM that matches the label in the Jeep, not from the shape of the grille.

JK and JL Are a Clean Break

The JK and the JL do not share a PCM. Connectors, software, and the security system changed. JK trucks pair through SKIM or SKREEM. JL trucks pair through the WIN module. A donor JK computer has no path into a JL immobilizer.

Inside the JK, 2012 is the other break. The 3.8 ended and the 3.6 began. Both are "JK PCMs" in conversation. They are different calibrations. A 2011 3.8 module installed in a 2014 3.6 will not run that engine.

On the JL, a 2.0 turbo, a 392, and a 4xe are different builds again. The 4xe adds hybrid hardware a gas 3.6 file does not control. The VIN is the list of what this Jeep has. The part number on the original PCM is the hardware check.

What a No-Start Is Telling You

Security Light

A flashing security light after a swap means the immobilizer has not accepted the module. That is programming, not a defective PCM. Does a Jeep PCM need to be programmed walks through the VIN flash and the key pairing. The original keys work after that pairing is written. They do not work before it.

Wrong Engine File

A module that starts and then runs badly, sets odd fuel trims, or will not shift is often the right generation with the wrong calibration. Manual and automatic JK and JL trucks use different files. Four-cylinder turbo software is not 3.6 software with a different badge.

The Failure Pattern Itself

A PCM that is actually done tends to stack unrelated codes, drop off the scan tool, or fail a memory check. One sensor code is still a sensor until the rest of the pattern shows up. Water in the connector and a weak ground are common on a Wrangler that lives off pavement. Fix those before the next module sees the same corrosion.

Match the Generation and the Engine

A Wrangler PCM has to match TJ, JK, or JL, and then the engine inside that generation. JK 3.8 and JK 3.6 are not the same part. JL gas, turbo, 392, and 4xe are not the same file. After the hardware matches, the VIN and the immobilizer still have to be written.

Premium PCM ships Wrangler modules pre-programmed to the VIN with the immobilizer paired, so the original keys work on install. Every module includes a free lifetime warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I put a JK PCM in a JL Wrangler?

No. They are different module generations and different immobilizer systems. Use the part number from the JL.

Will a 3.8 JK PCM run a 2012-2018 JK?

No. Those Jeeps use the 3.6 Pentastar. The calibration has to match the 3.6.

Does a Wrangler PCM need programming?

Yes. The VIN, the engine calibration, and the immobilizer pairing all have to be written. Without that, the engine cranks and the security light flashes.

Will the original keys still work?

Yes, once the immobilizer is paired to the new PCM. A pre-programmed module includes that step.
